Apple introduced support for third-party keyboards on iPhone and iPad since iOS 8. Since then many popular keyboards were ported to the iOS platform. Third-party keyboards are keyboards that generally offers features that are not offered by the stock iOS keyboard by Apple. For example some supports slide to type, animated GIF images, and more. Google recently foraged into the niche and launched their own keyboard, Gboard for iOS.

Canonical has today, April 21, 2016, officially launched the new version of its widely used Ubuntu Linux operating system for all devices. You can now download Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating for both desktops and servers.

Ubuntu 16.04, dubbed as Xenial Xerus, is the most advanced version of the Ubuntu OS released. Ubuntu 16.04 is a LTS (Long Term Support) release which means it will receive updates and security patches for five years. During this time, multiple point releases will be released like Ubuntu 16.04.1, Ubuntu 16.04.2, etc. Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) also uses long-term supported Linux kernel 4.4. Linux kernel 4.4 LTS will receive security updates and bug fixes longer than a normal kernel release would.

Apple has released public beta of OS X 10.11.4 beta 3. Before released to the public, the betas were seeded to Apple developers two days ago. OS X 10.11.4 beta 3 brings many new features, improvements and updates to Apple’s desktop operating system including secure notes, live photos to messages, and other stability and performance improvements. Apple also updated the developer build of OS X 10.11.4 beta 3 to 15E39d.

Google today released Chrome 48 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Chrome 48 adds custom notification buttons and removes support for unsecure RC4 encryption. If you have Google Chrome installed, your browser should have silently updated already. You can confirm it by looking at the version number displayed in the About window. You can also manually check for update using the same. Chrome’s built-in updater will start updating your browser if it has not done it yet. You can also download Chrome directly from google.com/chrome.

Microsoft at JSConf US in December 2015 talk announced that they will open-source key components of the Chakra JavaScript engine that powers Microsoft Edge. Today, the company announced the availability of the sources for ChakraCore, available under the MIT License, at its own ChakraCore GitHub repository. According to Microsoft, the ChakraCore repository provides a fully supported and open-source standalone JavaScript engine. ChakraCore has the same characteristics as the Microsoft Edge’s Chakra engine. Developers can use ChakraCore and embed it in projects, innovate on top of it and contribute back to the community.

Open Live Writer, an open source fork of Windows Live Writer was first made available two weeks ago on GitHub. Those who liked editing their blogs from the comfort of using Windows Live Writer, the best offline editing tool for blogs, will be glad to see it live again through the open source fork. Open Live Writer supports many popular blog service providers such as WordPress, Blogger, TypePad, Moveable Type, DasBlog, and many more.

Piriform has released a new update of Speccy, bumping the version number to 1.29. If you have never heard about Speccy, it is a useful freeware Windows application that helps you get insight about your computer system. Simply speaking, it is a system information tool for Windows users.

According to the official blog, Speccy 1.29 comes with improved Windows 10 compatibility. It has also improved support for the latest Intel Skylake and Broadwell processors. In addition to the above notable improvements, Speccy 1.29 also strengthens hardware detection with its updated hardware detection algorithm.

Microsoft has released the first major update for Windows 10, Threshold 2. The latest update brings a lot of performance improvement and feature improvements. Notably, both Microsoft Edge and Cortana got overhauled majorly in Windows 10 Threshold 2. You can find if you already have Windows 10 Threshold 2 installed by looking at the build number in System window. Threshold 2 is identified as Windows 10 build 10586 version 1511. You can easily dissect the build version number. 15 represents the year and 11 the month when Microsoft rolled out the update. Existing Windows 10 users will receive Threshold 2 via Windows Update.

Microsoft allows Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users to upgrade to Windows 10 free of cost. Although, to successfully activate Windows 10, users are required to upgrade directly from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Once Windows 10 is installed, Microsoft activates it automatically. From the next time users can clean install Windows 10 as the product key gets attached to the Microsoft Account and the hardware configuration.

The free upgrade system sounds perfect for both Microsoft and Windows users willing to take advantage of the free Windows 10 offer. But there are reports that suggest otherwise. Sometimes, either due to technical reasons or hardware issues, Windows 10 failed to activate after an upgrade, leaving users in a difficult situation. Also, some users may not want to take the upgrade path and may like to clean install Windows 10. How to get Windows 10 to activate after a clean install the first time? For all these reasons, Microsoft seems to be getting ready with a solution. Users will soon be able to activate Windows 10 using their existing Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 product key.

Apple releases Mac OS X 10.11.1 El Capitan update soon after announcing the release of the iOS 9.1 software update. OS X 10.11.1 is the first point release of the OS X 10.11 El Capitan operating system.
