Almost all Android-based smartphones are affected by a dangerous Android USSD vulnerability. The USSD vulnerability allows any malicious users to wipe completely your Android phone remotely, either by directing you to a URL, or through a text message or scan a QR code or NFC tag linking to the malicious website.

The USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) codes (a code starting with asterisk *, continuing with hashtags # or digits, which represent commands or data, and ending with a hashtag) are normally used by handsets to communicate with carriers. A common USSD code used by all handsets is *#06# which displays the IMEI number of your device.

Windows users always had to deal with malware which spreads by exploiting the autorun feature. Some of the most notorious malware including the famous Conficker worm exploited this feature of Windows to spread across so fast. Microsoft introduced the autorun feature back with Windows XP to help software installers run automatically. This feature was developed to help the non-techie computer users easily install software. Apparently, malware writers and cyber-criminals started exploiting this feature to rapidly infect Windows.

Microsoft has released Fix it solutions to disable autorun in Windows, but that’s not enough to secure Windows from the autorun.inf threats. Even if autorun is disabled, if a user double-clicks on an external infected device, like a USB flash drive infected by the autorun.inf malware, Windows will get infected by the malware.

Windows users knows the importance of keeping their Windows operating system up-to-date. After-all, Windows has security issues, errors, or bugs that are regularly addressed by Microsoft every month through Patch Tuesday. Occasionally the operating system also receives new features through these updates. But, the operating system is not only the weak point for malicious users and hackers to enter your computer system.

Today, malicious programmers have shifted their focus on third-party applications such as Adobe Flash and Java. The reason for shifting their focus on third-party applications from the operating system is most users seldom update their third-party software. It is the truth, and you all will agree with me. After all, have you every checked all your installed apps to see if they are up-to-date? The main problem lies in the way Windows software is delivered to end-users. Microsoft doesn’t have any control over third-party apps so they don’t offer updates for them through Windows Update.
