Internet Explorer 9 is already available for download and you may have installed it already just to see whats new. Now, if you are looking for how to uninstall Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) off Windows 7/Vista or if you don’t want to keep IE9 and want back previous version of IE installed, IE8 or IE7. Then we have just found an easy way to do so.
Since IE9 is installed as a Windows Update and is not like other programs on your computer, you won’t find IE9 listed on the “Uninstall” or “Change a program” screen.

For uninstalling IE9 properly and cleanly from Windows 7 or Vista, just follow the simple steps below:
- Click on the Start Button and in the search box type view updates
- Once the results appear, click on view installed updates
If you want to do it quickly without doing the search, Press Win+R to open the Run dialog box to paste the following Enter:
C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{d450a8a1-9568-45c7-9c0e-b4f9fb4537bd} - Wait for a few moments for the “Uninstall an update” screen to load completely
- Now, scroll through the list until you find the entry: Windows Internet Explorer 9
- Click on that entry once to highlight it, then click on the uninstall button to continue uninstalling (You can also right-click on the entry and select uninstall.)
- Confirm that you want to uninstall by clicking on Yes.
Here are the instructions straight from Microsoft:
Click the Start button, type Programs and Features in the search box, and then click View installed updates in the left pane.
Under Uninstall an update, scroll down to the Microsoft Windows section.
Right-click Windows Internet Explorer 9, click Uninstall, and then, when prompted, click Yes.
Click one of the following:
Restart now (to finish the process of uninstalling Internet Explorer 9, and restore the previous version of Internet Explorer).
Restart later (to wait until you shut down or restart your computer).
Note: After you uninstall Internet Explorer 9, the previously installed version ofInternet Explorer will be available on your computer. It is not necessary to reinstall.

i installed ie9 but didnt like it, so i restored it to previous version but it became corrupted, n effected other thinks, many things (like antivirus etc) dont work properly now. what should i do? couldnt find it in the list of installed update…:(
How did you restored back to the previous version? Did you used System Restore?
yes i used system restore n it didn’t work, then i right-click internet explorer in start menu than i clicked restore to previous versions. what should i do now? thank u very much
Prior to IE9 update, which version of IE you were running? Also, did you used the uninstallation procedure described in this article before attempting a system restore?
i used IE8, no i did not use the uninstallation procedure as described in this article, i immediately attempted system restore
Ok, try the steps as described here:
To uninstall IE9, you can turn off and turn on the Windows Feature. This will reinstall IE8 for you.
Do reply back if it worked for you. :)
i already reinstalled IE8 as u said, so it’s IE8 now, but it’s still corrupted (it close immediately after i open it). n i also tried SFC to repair the corrupted system files, but the SFC also close immediately after i open it.
how to do the repair install? does it mean i have to reformat my computer and reinstall windows?
Try to run
sfc /scannowin elevated Command Prompt (Search forcmdin Start Menu. On the cmd shortcut, right-click and select Run as Administrator). You have to run the command a number of times. Also see this page for some tips.
Reply back if it works or not.
i searched cmd n ran it as admnstr, but nothing happen, only two lines written there,
in second line, it’s wriiten; …..user_my name
that’s all
Yes, there, in the command prompt, you had to run the
sfc /scannowcommand.i had run sfc /scannow, but it stop when it reach 58%, n it’s written there: windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation.
so what’s the next step? tq..
Ok, it seems it is not able to repair all the files. Download and run this Fix-It tool by Microsoft to fix IE8.
Reference: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378
Hopefully this should solve your problem.
If it doesn’t solve the problem, than try Fix IE Utility.
I forgot to ask you which security suite are you running in your system?
i’ve downloaded n run fit-it tool, but it did not work. then i tried fix ie utility but it did not run.
i use kaspersky internet security 11
Your IE8 crashing issue may be due to a corrupted add-in or any other issue too.
Try to uninstall Adobe Flash first. Visit this page at Adobe.com: How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX control. Now, go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Internet Options. In Internet Options, at the bottom of the Advanced tab, click the Reset button. You’ll see one confirmation dialog box that lists the settings to be disabled. Now see if IE works.
If the above method doesn’t work, try reviewing the following articles (source):

If that doesn’t resolve the problem, then try the following two procedures in the order presented:

P.S. Did you run Fix IE as an Administrator? Right-click on FixIE utility and select Run as Administrator and try again.
At last if everything fails, run a full system scan using KIS to see if any malware issue is causing this behavior.
when i press f8 when starting my computer, there is “repair” option. if i click it, does it mean i reformat my computer n have reinstall windows?
No, it will not reformat your Windows. Basically, when you click on the Repair option, Windows will load the System Recovery Options menu. This menu contains several tools, such as Startup Repair, that can help you recover Windows from a serious error. This set of tools is on your computer’s hard disk and on the Windows installation disc.
We have covered earlier this tools at: http://www.mytechguide.org/8515/use-system-repair-disc-restore-windows-7-vista/
Microsoft is also having a very extensive help and support page regarding this tool at: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-are-the-system-recovery-options-in-Windows-7
It’s weird that none of the IE repair options worked for you, even the ones which are recommended by Microsoft itself??
Try this:

Thank you, the IE site was absolutely useless. They told me to uninstall from the Programs list, which as you pointed out it’s not on. I even tried to reinstall IE9 and it told me what I downloaded was corrupted.
I don’t use IE as my default browser because it is such a PoS, unfortunately I have to go to one site that only seems to work in IE and I have a piece of software that uses IE to connect to the net. In fact it was that software that is why I needed the fix, otherwise it could of rotted on my desktop for the rest of my computers life.
I followed this instruction, worked perfectly to take ie9 off my laptop. Unfortunately, now no other updates will install. To date I have 14 important updates that will not install (keeps coming up with error messages). Go to microsoft to see what the solution the specific error messages are, but no help there (of course!). Interesting that the most important update according to the list is NOT the security patches, but bloody well IE9. Are microsoft getting deperate???
Can you tell us the error code that you are getting?
It won’t uninstall for me. It says “an error has occured, not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled.”
Hi,
When IE9 is running, I type a search into the search bar, Nothing appears after its done searching…no errors, the address bar still shows: http:\\search.yahoo.com/….but nothing is on the screen its blank below the address/search bars…what can I do to be able to see my searches?
Thanks,
Mike
i have done this but my problem not fixed, so will say this post was not good for me
when i uninstall exolorer 9. I do not get the previous version back. Infact, I end up with no explorer on my system. This in turn requires that I restore my system in order to use it at all and this in turn, reinstalls explorer 9. I’m at my wits end and don’t know what to do. Caan someone tell me how to fix this problem?
If you want 8 or older then I think you can download it from a site.
Lucky you. No one else seems to be able to uninstall IE. Tell us how you did it.
Run this command to remove, YW
FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*9.*.mum /c “cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /norestart”
Thanks for this post, i will try that.
Thank you for this. Helped me alot :)
I’m missing install files on my computer to uninstall ie9 windows7 sp1. I tried installing ie9 from the website but it said that I have a more recent version. There is no option in the control panel to uninstall. Any way around this?
I open up the uninstall programs then click on View installed Updates and nothing appears. I’ve tried several uninstall suggestions for IE9 and nothing works. I tried reinstalling it states my version is newer.
I tried upgrading to IE10 and it states I need updates I click on Get Updates and I’m looking at stuff I have no idea on what their talking about.
Is there an easy way to either upgrade or uninstall? A one click button would be ideal.
Microsoft purposely does not want you to uninstall IE, that is why they did this, don’t you understand Microsoft is in control of your computer and your life?
