Uninstall Internet Explorer 9 [How To, Windows]

Internet Explorer 9 is already available for download and you may have installed it already just to see whats new. Now, if you are looking for how to uninstall Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) off Windows 7/Vista or if you don’t want to keep IE9 and want back previous version of IE installed, IE8 or IE7. Then we have just found an easy way to do so.

Since IE9 is installed as a Windows Update and is not like other programs on your computer, you won’t find IE9 listed on the “Uninstall” or “Change a program” screen.

uninstall ie9

For uninstalling IE9 properly and cleanly from Windows 7 or Vista, just follow the simple steps below:

  1. Click on the Start Button and in the search box type view updates
  2. Once the results appear, click on view installed updates

If you want to do it quickly without doing the search, Press Win+R to open the Run dialog box to paste the following Enter:
    C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{d450a8a1-9568-45c7-9c0e-b4f9fb4537bd}

  3. Wait for a few moments for the “Uninstall an update” screen to load completely
  4. Now, scroll through the list until you find the entry: Windows Internet Explorer 9
  5. Click on that entry once to highlight it, then click on the uninstall button to continue uninstalling (You can also right-click on the entry and select uninstall.)
  6. Confirm that you want to uninstall by clicking on Yes.

Here are the instructions straight from Microsoft:

  1. Click the Start button, type Programs and Features in the search box, and then click View installed updates in the left pane.

  2. Under Uninstall an update, scroll down to the Microsoft Windows section.

  3. Right-click Windows Internet Explorer 9, click Uninstall, and then, when prompted, click Yes.

  4. Click one of the following:

    • Restart now (to finish the process of uninstalling Internet Explorer 9, and restore the previous version of Internet Explorer).

    • Restart later (to wait until you shut down or restart your computer).

Note: After you uninstall Internet Explorer 9, the previously installed version ofInternet Explorer will be available on your computer. It is not necessary to reinstall.

Prior to IE9 update, which version of IE you were running? Also, did you used the uninstallation procedure described in this article before attempting a system restore?

Thank you, the IE site was absolutely useless. They told me to uninstall from the Programs list, which as you pointed out it’s not on. I even tried to reinstall IE9 and it told me what I downloaded was corrupted.

I don’t use IE as my default browser because it is such a PoS, unfortunately I have to go to one site that only seems to work in IE and I have a piece of software that uses IE to connect to the net. In fact it was that software that is why I needed the fix, otherwise it could of rotted on my desktop for the rest of my computers life.

  19. Dean says:

I followed this instruction, worked perfectly to take ie9 off my laptop. Unfortunately, now no other updates will install. To date I have 14 important updates that will not install (keeps coming up with error messages). Go to microsoft to see what the solution the specific error messages are, but no help there (of course!). Interesting that the most important update according to the list is NOT the security patches, but bloody well IE9. Are microsoft getting deperate???

  20. Julie says:

It won’t uninstall for me. It says “an error has occured, not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled.”
