How To Setup a USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 7

If you have a netbook and would like to upgrade it to Windows 7, you may be wondering how to do it without a clunky external DVD Drive. Previously, we showed you how to install Windows 7 from a USB flash drive. But the process was very geeky and involved some risks. We also talked about a nice little utility that does the job easily but we didn’t show you how to use the program. Today, we will show you how to setup a USB Flash Drive to install Windows 7.

The process of installing Windows 7 from a flash drive is essentially the same as installing it from Windows 7 DVD media. When using a flash drive, the main work involves setting it up so that it becomes a bootable device with the OS on it.

Note: You’ll need a minimum of a 4GB USB flash drive for the Windows 7 installation files.

How to use WinToFlash to setup a USB flash drive to install Windows 7?

We had given a brief introduction about WinToFlash here. To use WinToFlash just follow through the straight forward wizard, and you’ll be ready to install Windows 7 from your USB flash drive in no time.

Now, select “Transfer Windows Vista/2008/7 setup to USB drive”.

Now, choose the location of the Windows installation disc and the USB drive.

Click on Next, you’ll now need to agree to the Windows 7 EULA to continue.

Now, sit back and wait until the USB flash drive is formatted and the files are transferred over to it. The amount of time it takes to complete this task will vary between systems.

After completion of the process WinToFlash will give you the following window.

Now, you can easily use the USB flash drive created to install Windows 7 on your netbook or any other computer that supports booting from a USB drive.
