Apple has announced the release date of the next Mac OS X update, OS X El Capitan at its Apple Special Event held on September 9, 2015. Along with the release date, Apple also announced the availability of OS X 10.11 El Capitan GM build for all Mac users participating in the Mac Developer Beta and OS X Public Beta programs. OS X El Capitan will be available as a free update to the general public on September 30, 2015. The free update was first announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference back in June, 2015.

OS X El Capitan release date

Apple quite cleverly announced OS X El Capitan release date through a demo email message that can be missed very easily during the product keynote. During the demo, an email was briefly shown on the big screen, marked as El Capitan status. It was sent to Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, from Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of marketing. The contents read, “El Capitan is looking great and the feedback from the beta has been fantastic! … El Capitan ship date is September 30.” Apple has since updated its website to show the announced date.

If you do not know what a GM build is, well, GM is the abbreviation of Golden Master. When a build reaches GM stage, it indicates that the software has reached its final build in the software production cycle and it is ready to be released to the general public. Thus from the information we have, we can very safely say that the final build of OS X El Capitan will be OS X 10.11 El Capitan 15A282b.

If you are a participant of either Mac Developer Beta or OS X Public Beta program you should already see OS X 10.11 El Capitan GM build available for download through Software Update. You also have to make sure you are signed in with your Apple ID that is associated with your Apple Developer Program or Apple Developer Enterprise Program. If you cannot see the update, try refreshing the Update tab or try again later some time. The update is around 2GB in size and it will need a system reboot to complete the installation.

In addition to the OS X El Capitan GM release, Apple also released iOS 9 GM and iOS 9.1 beta 1 to the developers. Developers can now update their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to these latest iOS 9 builds.

P.S. For the wondering souls, El Capitan is a famous mountain peak within Yosemite National Park. It is a continuation of the company’s latest trend of giving its operating system names inspired by California.
