Mozilla Thunderbird 38 Comes With GMail OAuth2, Yahoo Messenger Support

Mozilla has released a major version of its email, chat, calendar, and new aggregator client, Thunderbird. Mozilla Thunderbird 38 is now available for all supported operating systems; Microsoft WindowsMac OS X and Linux. It has been so long before Thunderbird reached version 38. It was stuck on the 31.x branch but the wait has finally paid of for its users.

Earlier, Mozilla decided that the popular email client will no longer receive any major updates or feature any new functions. It seems that the power of Thunderbird users is greater than Mozilla itself. After the last Thunderbird version 31.7.0 update, Mozilla today released Thunderbird 38.0.1.

At this moment, when you check for the latest version using the built-in updater it may say you already have the latest version. It may take some time before the changes are reflected but you can manually download the latest version from Mozilla’s distribution servers. See for the download links at the end of this post.

On Thunderbird 38.0.1 release web page, Mozilla says, “version 38.0.1, first offered to Release channel users on June 11, 2015. Thunderbird 38.0.1 contains underlying code that is based on of Firefox 38.0.1esr. There was no Thunderbird 38.0 release.”

Mozilla Thunderbird 38.0.1: What’s new?

Thunderbird finally supports OAuth2 authentication for Gmail accounts. It’s a relief for all users of the email client. Now, they don’t have to manually select “allow less secure applications” in Google options for their account. It now comes with the Lightning calendar add-on. The add-on is enabled by default but users can opt-out of it. Users can filter sent messages, and messages when archived. Users can finally search in multiple/all address books. It now supports Yahoo Messenger in Chat. Internationalized domain name URLs are now supported for RSS feeds.

Additionally, the email client now shows expanded columns in folder pane. It allows file-per-message (maildir) local message storage. Mozilla added support for reading position marker line to conversations, a Learn more link to the support page in feeds subscribe dialog. The editor for twitter now shows character count. You can see the complete change log here.
