Apple unveiled the next Mac operating system update, OS X Yosemite (OS X 10.10) recently at WWDC 2014. During the WWDC 2014 keynote, Apple showed everyone the new features, what to expect from OS X 10.10 and many other details of the upcoming Mac operating system. Apple also announced availability of OS X 10.10 Yosemite for beta testing to the developers. Since OS X Yosemite announcement, many Mac users are asking the inevitable question that comes first in their mind, “Will OS X Yosemite run on my Mac?”. Well, here’s the answer to your question, Official Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10 system requirements. The information is what Apple has provided to everyone. It may change later (not likely though) during the release of OS X Yosemite to the public.

OS X Yosemite System Requirement

OS X Yosemite (aka, OS X 10.10) System Requirement

Briefly, (as confirmed by Apple) if your Mac has 2GB of RAM, 8GB of free hard disk storage space and runs at least OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, then it’s good enough to run OS X Yosemite. Your Mac should run at least OS X Snow Leopard (v 10.6.8) so that you can use the Mac App Store to install OS X Yosemite. OS X Yosemite will be a free upgrade available for download from the Mac App Store.

Officially OS X Yosemite will run on the following Mac hardware

  • iMac (mid-2007 or newer models)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid-2009 or newer 13-inch models, Mid/Late 2007 or newer 15-inch models, Late 2007 or newer 17-inch models)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer models)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer models)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 13-inch Aluminum models, Early 2009 or newer 13-inch models)
  • Mac Mini (Early 2009 or newer models)
  • Xserve (Early 2009 models)

If you look closely, you will notice that the system requirements of OS X Yosemite is same as the official system requirement for the current Mac operating system OS X Mavericks (OS X 10.9) running on your Mac. Officially the current Mac operating system (OS X 10.9 Mavericks) can run on the following Mac hardware.

OS X Mavericks

  • iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
  • MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

Your Mac also needs to have 2 GB or more RAM, 8 GB or more free hard disk (or SSD) space. Additionally your Mac should run either OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 operating system. As you can see, (comparing the two lists) OS X Yosemite’s system requirements are exactly what OS X Mavericks system requirements are. So which Mac are you having? Will you upgrade to OS X Yosemite or are you happy with the current Mac operating system? Add your thoughts in the comments below.
