How to Move Your Notes, Notebooks from Evernote to Microsoft OneNote
Evernote is one of the most popular note taking apps which has been around for a while now. Evernote recently published about changes to its subscription plans. All paid subscription plans are going to be pricier for paid customers. Evernote is also making changes to the free plan (basically crippling it) so more users upgrade to their premium plans. Free plans will now allow you to have only two devices connected to your account. Needless to say, all these changes are going make a lot people move from Evernote and look out for alternatives. If you are one of them who is looking to jump ship to service like Microsoft OneNote, here’s how you can move all your notes, notebooks and tags from your Evernote account to Microsoft OneNote. In the end, we will also show you how to delete your Evernote account after moving to OneNote.
Move from Evernote to OneNote
You may not know but there is a simple Evernote to OneNote Import Tool available. Evernote to OneNote Import Tool is still in Beta but it works fine. It makes the process of migrating and reorganizing your Evernote notes, notebooks and tags in OneNote smooth. Here’s the walk-through of the migration process.
Make sure you have Evernote desktop app installed on your Windows PC. If you do not have it, you can download and install it from here. After installing it, open it and sign into your Evernote account. Let the Evernote app sync all your notes, notebooks and tags on your desktop.
After Evernote has synced your data, download and run the Evernote to OneNote Import Tool. Accept the EULA to proceed with the import process. It will start looking for Evernote on your computer.
Once found, it will display a list of notebooks available for import. Select the notebooks that you want to import into OneNote and click on Next.
Alternatively, if you have already exported Evernote file (.enex
), you can select it here by clicking “Import a file instead”. If you already have the exported Evernote file, you do not need to install Evernote on your computer.
Next, it will ask you the type of account you would like to use to save your content to OneNote. For most people it means your Microsoft account. Select the “Sign in with a Microsoft account” option and sign into it.
The next step will show how your Evernote notes, and notebooks will be organized in OneNote. Here, you have the option to keep Evernote tags or to shed them when the data is imported. Click on Import to start the migration process.
Import may take a while to complete as it depends on the number of notes you have in your Evernote account. Once the data has been imported, it will be synced to OneNote.
If you already have the OneNote app installed on your computer, you might see them sooner than you would on the OneNote web app.
The advantage of using OneNote is it is readily available in Windows 10. It has no limitation whatsoever on the number of devices you can sync your notes to. It allows offline access to notes on your mobile and has unlimited monthly uploads. You also get premium features of Evernote like saving email to notes and digitizing business cards in OneNote free.
How to Delete Your Evernote Account
Now that you have exported your data from Evernote into OneNote, you may want to delete your Evernote account. But Evernote does not allow you to delete your account. It only allows you to deactivate it.
You need to sign into Evernote web app to deactivate your account. Before you deactivate Evernote recommends you to delete all your private and sensitive notes from Evernote and empty the thrash. You can delete your notes and empty the thrash by following the instructions available on this page.
If you are sure that you want to deactivate your Evernote account, you may want to Return to your notes and delete any private notes, then Empty the Trash to permanently delete these notes. (Evernote does not automatically delete your notes.) Then, return to this page to complete the process.
When your account is deactivated, you will be logged out of Evernote, and this account will no longer be usable. You will not be able to create another Evernote account with your same email address. To change your email address, go to the Settings page.
After you have removed all your personal notes and emptied the thrash, visit the Settings page and scroll down. You will see a link that says “Deactivate your Evernote account”, click on it.
On the “Account Deactivation” page, click on the “Yes, I want to deactivate my account” check box. Now, click on the “Deactivate account” button. More detailed information is available here.
