LibreOffice 3.6 Released, Includes Portable Version, Download Links

The Document Foundation have released LibreOffice 3.6, one of the best open-source Office suite available. An open-source alternative to Microsoft Office and a fork of Apache OpenOffice, LibreOffice 3.6 is the fourth major release of the open-source Office suite. With version 3.6, The Document Foundation have introduced a number of new features and improved performance.

Some of the notable new features includes PDF export with watermark, new CorelDRAW importer, high quality image scaling, improved auto-format function for tables in text documents, color-scales and data-bars in spreadsheet cells, improved CSV handling, integration with Alfresco via the CMIS protocol and limited SharePoint integration, and Microsoft SmartArt import for text documents.

LibreOffice 3.6 “provides a large number of new features and incremental improvement over the earlier versions,” wrote Florian Effenberger, chairman of the Board at the Document Foundation, in the official announcement.

“Innovations range from invisible features such as improved performance and interoperability to the more visible ones such as user interface tweaks, where theming has improved to more closely match current design best-practice,” Florian Effenberger added.

The word processor module of LibreOffice, Writer has been improved a lot. Writer now supports contextual spacing, displays Word Count in its status bar, support for importing Microsoft Office SmartArt.

LibreOffice Calc

Calc is the spreadsheet module of LibreOffice. It has also been improved a lot. Calc now supports improved CSV file importing, supports color scales and data bars. Calc now has an option to specify a custom sheet name prefix in new documents, among other changes. In accordance with the ODF OpenFormula specification a new spreadsheet function is also added.

Impress is the presentation module of the Office suite. Like the earlier two modules, it has also been improved. Impress now supports widescreen format for slideshows, comes bundled with 10 new templates.

LibreOffice 3.6 GUI and other improvements

The user interface of LibreOffice 3.6 is refined with a cleaner look, especially for the Windows operating system. You will also be greeted with a new splash screen, and a redesigned “About” page. You can go through the complete list of bug fixes and new features here.
