AeroTweak is freeware application for Windows 7 and Vista that allows you to easily change about 50 system settings and tweak Windows. The settings includes those that affects the user interface, system performance and system security. It is a standalone portable utility and does not need any installation as such.

AeroTweak also lets you recover your Windows 7 or Windows Vista product key. You can also view general system information. It lets you create System Restore point using only a click of a button before you make changes to your system, so that you can later revert back to old settings if you face a problem.

Many Windows XP users probably know about Microsoft TweakUI. It is a Windows XP system tweaker by Microsoft. For some reason Microsoft never released any utility similar to TweakUI for Windows 7 and Vista. According to the developer of AeroTweak, they created AeroTweak to fill up the void created by the non-existence of proper free tweaking utilities for Windows Vista and above.

AeroTweak interface supports only Russian and English languages. It is fully portable and consists of only one file “AeroTweak.exe” which is around 1 MB in size, thus you can carry it around in your USB flash drive.

Download AeroTweak

You have just brought a brand new PC or laptop or netbook that came pre-installed with Windows 7 from one of the major manufacturers, viz. Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Toshiba, etc. But the problem that you face when buying from them is you won’t receive any Windows 7 installation media with your purchase. Instead, you will receive either a “recovery disc” (if you’re that much lucky) with your purchase or you’ll have a “recovery partition” built-in your machine.

You may ask what is the problem here, as you can easily recover your Windows 7 or Vista, using the “recovery disk” or “recovery partition.” Well, the problem is, when you use the recovery disks/recovery partition to recover Windows 7 or Vista, it will delete all your files and restore your computer to the state it was in when you first purchased it.

Windows 7 and Windows Vista DVD installation media comes with a “recovery center” that allows you to fix common Windows operating system related problems without restoring the whole computer back. If you do not have this DVD, Microsoft have made a recovery disc for this purpose. The Windows 7/Vista Recovery Disc can be used to access a system recovery menu, giving you options of using System Restore, Complete PC Backup, automated system repair, and a command-line prompt for manual advanced recovery.

NeoSmart Technologies is hosting a copy of the Windows 7 Recovery Disc and a copy of Windows Vista Recovery Disk for your convenience. Windows 7 Recovery Disk 32-bit version is 143 MB in download size while the 64-bit is 165 MB in download size. Windows Vista Recovery Disk is 120 MB in download size. All these recovery disks are in the standard ISO format, ready to be burned directly to a CD or DVD.

Don’t wait until your PC crashes to download a copy! Download and burn your recovery disc today, so that when the time comes, you’ll be ready!

Note: You cannot use the recovery disc to install Windows 7 or Windows Vista from scratch or reinstall Windows.

[ Download Windows 7 Recovery Disc ]

Microsoft has released a free download manager, dubbed the Microsoft Download Manager, is designed to integrate seamlessly with Windows 7. It is now available as free download from Microsoft. Microsoft Download Manager utility is designed to help users control their downloads beyond the boundaries of the browser. It is specifically designed for downloads from Microsoft pages on the Internet but it can be used for any HTTP based downloads.

The Microsoft Download Manager enables you to download files from the Internet in a more reliable and faster way than using a browser alone. Using the Download Manager makes it easier to download large files such as an application or multimedia files.

More often than not, when users try downloading very large files, they face all kinds of problems, especially in the context of an unreliable connection. In such situations a download manager comes to rescue the user and helps the user to complete any download tasks, a feature which is missing in the browsers.

Upon installation users will find that Microsoft Download Manager features basic download manager functionality. The basic interface enables the user to add, pause, resume and delete downloads. Users can open the download folder after the download is complete. It also allows for some customization, featuring options such as the number of automatic retries, and the maximum number of simultaneous connections (up to 16 simultaneous connections). It also allows the user to configure a destination folder for the downloads or a proxy server for the application to use.

Microsoft Download Manager is a lightweight program and the download size is only 1.1 MB, which can be attributed to the lack of many advanced features. Microsoft Download Manager will be good enough for users who download files mostly from Microsoft website and occasionally from the Internet.

Microsoft Download Manager can be downloaded directly from Microsoft. Microsoft Download Manager supports not only Windows 7, but also for Windows Vista and Windows XP SP2 and SP3. Microsoft Download Manager is designed to work with Internet Explorer 8, Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 6, Firefox 3, Firefox 2.

If you want to control the maximum time that any user is allowed to spend on your computer, then Romaco Timeout is the application that will help you. Romaco Timeout is specially useful for parents who wants to restrict the amount of time their child spends using the computer. It is a very small and easy to use utility which helps lock a child or any user out of their accounts when the maximum set time for that particular user is reached.

This free utility takes parental controls on your Windows operating system to the next level. Romaco Timeout also controls how much time a user can spend online before the application locks down the browser, and also gives the option of turning everything back on again after a certain amount of time has elapsed. If you want to set the application to start-up automatically every time a certain user logs on, you can do that, too.

When the maximum allotted time of computer usage reaches then the user is either logged off his account or the computer shuts down completely. After the user is logged off he/she will only be able to log back in if the administration password is typed, otherwise the user will have to wait until the next day when his usage quota will be reset. Romaco Timeout is designed to be automatic so it will require no administration after the first setup. But if you want to change its settings read below for a small how to.

How to use Romaco Timeout?

After the installation of Romaco Timeout, launch it with Administrator privileges. Upon first launch it will prompt you to set the administrator password.

Now to configure Romaco Timeout, first click on the Enable Timeout check box.

Timeout is user account specific, so if you want to restrict more than one user account, simply log into that account and configure the settings individually for each account.

Now select which mode to use between Daily Quota and Pre-session Time Limit. If Romaco Timeout is to work without user intervention for every session, then the Startup Automatically For This User check box must be checked.

The Daily Quota mode lets you set a time limit in hours and minutes for each day.

The Per-Session mode lets you set a time limit in hours and minutes for the session.

The Warn box lets you set the time at which the user will receive a warning about his/her session time out, so that they can save their work. Select the action when the time limit ends for the user from the Action Option.

The buttons on the right side give you more control over the software, you can reset quotas, reset the administrative password, get help on Romaco Timeout, etc. from those buttons.

[ Download Romaco Timeout ]

Romaco Timeout works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

A new user string is also introduced, with the feature to change the user agent string in the preview version of IE9.

IE9’s default UA string

There are four changes to IE8’s UA string that site developers need to be aware of:
1. Application version is incremented from ‘Mozilla/4.0′ to ‘Mozilla/5.0′ to match other browsers (explained well in the great History of the user-agent string post). This change signals that IE9 is an interoperable browser.
2. Version token is incremented from ‘MSIE 8.0′ to ‘MSIE 9.0′.
3. Trident token is incremented from ‘Trident/4.0′ to ‘Trident/5.0′.
4. IE9 will send the following short UA string without additions made by other software installed on the machine:

IE9′s Compatibility View UA string

Similar to IE8, IE9′s Compatibility View will map to IE7 Standards Mode, and IE9′s UA string when in Compatibility View will be:

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0; Trident/5.0)

In Compatibility View, IE9 reports itself as IE7 through the application version number (Mozilla/4.0) and version token (MSIE 7.0). This is done for compatibility. An incremented Trident token, from ‘Trident/4.0′ to ‘Trident/5.0′, allows websites to distinguish between IE9 running in Compat View and IE8 running in Compat View.

The complete list of changes and resolved issues is listed in the release notes.

Download Internet Explorer 9

You can download the Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview 2 from the official Microsoft website.

Note: Internet Explorer 9 Platform preview can be installed side by side with Internet Explorer 8. IE9 PP2 is not yet suitable for full browsing experience as it is not yet a fully functional browser, and, lacks many important browser elements, and is just a preview. Read the FAQ before installing. Read the User Guide for some useful help and tips.

System Requirements

Internet Explorer Platform Preview requires Windows 7 (x86 or x64) or Windows Vista SP2 (x86 or x64).

For Vista users, Windows Internet Explorer 8 and DirectX 2D (D2D) must be installed on your system. If you’re not already running Internet Explorer 8, download and install it first. Then install DirectX 2D by installing the Platform Update for Windows Vista, available on Windows Update. Platform Preview is only available in a 32-bit x86 version but it will install and run on 64-bit Windows 7 and Vista.

SE-TrayMenu is a very simple, easy to use, light weight (portable application size is only 114 KB and the standalone installer is 404KB) and free portable application launcher for Windows. SE-TrayMenu is the best alternative to the Windows Quick Launch feature. It resides in the system tray and gives access to a customizable pop-up menu (on mouse over) through which you can select an application to run. You can easily add any programs, documents, folders, Internet links, etc. shortcut to the pop-up menu by simply dragging and dropping. You can also easily add shortcut keys to any of the shortcuts for quick access.

Main features:

SE-TrayMenu key features are:

Quick adding of programs, documents, folders, internet links and more to your Windows system tray

Global hotkey managing to access everything you want with one click

Quick adding of applications and links using drag and drop

Completely customizable view with lots of pre-defined layouts and color schemes

Clear interface with multiple languages support

Portable version is available

Features that I liked the most in SE-TrayMenu are:

Customization

SE-TrayMenu’s appearance is completely customizable. You can easily change the layout of the way the list is displayed. Available options are: List of names, Small vertical list, Two columns, Wide fields. See the screenshots below.

List of names

Small vertical list

Two columns

You can also customize the size of the icons, whether to show the program name at the bottom of the icon or on the side, the amount of margin you want between the items etc. Lots of themes are also available for customizing the overall look of the pop-up menu. You can also change the behavior of the menu display from the default mouse over to single mouse click. Availability of keyboard shortcuts, which further speeds up the launching of frequently used applications.

Portability

The application is fully portable and you can carry it around in a USB flash drive. Support for a range of Windows editions: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, makes it a good choice as an application launcher.

Note: The application is written in .NET, so the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is required.

Few days ago I wrote about FixWin, a free application which helps you fix a number of Windows 7 and Windows Vista errors. It’s a lot like Microsoft’s web-based FixIt solutions. Windows users are now having another option to fix common Windows problems and this one comes straight from Microsoft stable. Microsoft Fix it Center Client contains troubleshooters that help detect issues on target PCs and solve them on demand or proactively.

Microsoft’s new Fix It Center is a program which you can download for free. Fix It Center is currently in Beta stage and provides automatic fixes for a wide range of Windows bugs, problems and annoyances. You just need to choose the issue you need to fix, click Run, and follow the prompts (if any) by the program. The simple step-by-step instructions are very easy to follow and even your family and friends who are not so expert of computers can correct these problems with ease.

Fixes offered by Microsoft Fix It Center ranges from fixing Aero transparency problem to hardware or network adapter glitches and to Windows Media Player library and DVD issues. Fix It Center also features an inbuilt Windows system maintenance that checks for broken shortcuts, date and time problems, disk volume errors, etc.

Fix it Center can be installed on:

AVG Antivirus by Grisoft is a very good antivirus program. However, there are times when you may want to uninstall. You may want to fix AVG by first completely uninstalling it and then reinstalling AVG again or when you want to try another antivirus suite. Also, this “how to” article will come handy when the normal uninstall procedure is not working for you.

Whatever be the reason for uninstalling AVG, below you will find both the normal procedure as well as the manual procedure for doing this:

Normal Uninstall

The first thing you should try, and, recommended, is uninstall AVG using the Add/Remove Programs (for Windows XP) or using Programs and Features (for Windows 7 and Vista) under Control Panel. Follow these instructions to carry out the task:

Click on the Start Button, select Control Panel.

Open Add/Remove Programs (for Windows XP users) or Open Programs and Features (for Windows 7 and Vista users).

Find AVG in the Programs list and highlight it.

Click on Remove or right-click and select Uninstall and follow the wizard to uninstall AVG.

Manual Uninstall (Complete Removal of AVG)

Grisoft, the maker of AVG, provides an uninstall utility specially made to remove AVG completely from the computer system. Follow the steps below:

Click on the following link and download AVG Remover to your desktop. Select the 32-bit if you are using the 32-bit version or download the 64-bit if you are using the 64-bit version.

www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools

Double-click on the downloaded file to run it. Windows 7 or Vista users should run it in elevated command prompt. Click on Yes to continue removing AVG from your computer. It may need one or more restarts during the cleaning process.

Once the uninstall has completed, restart your computer. You can then go ahead and install another antivirus or install AVG again.

Windows service is a program or a process that runs in the background and provides support to other programs. Advanced users sometimes customize how the services run on their Windows and disables optional services or services which they don’t need to speed-up Windows. If you are novice user, and don’t want to mess around with Windows service settings, here is a smart tool to fine tune services in Windows 7, Vista and Windows XP.

SMART (Service Management and RealEasy Tweaking) is a small portable utility, developed by The Windows Club and is based on the suggested configurations of BlackVipers, to customize your Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP service settings, according to your requirements. With SMART utility, you can Start, Stop or Disable services quickly. When you click on any service, SMART utility will show you detailed information about the service along with location of the service.

Note: As with any one-click fix program, it’s a good idea to create a system restore point before making any changes. The developer’s have taken care about this and have provided a button “Create a Restore Point” in the program. Pretty neat!

To change the start-up type of any service, right-click on the service and then select Automatic, Manual or Disabled type. Double-click on a service to start or stop it. And if you are new to Windows Services, you can use the Safe settings, Tweaked settings, Advanced settings and Default settings presets to change the service settings quickly. SMART is a standalone tool that requires no installation, just download it and run.

Existing habits are hard to change. Being a Windows user for so many years and used it as the primary and only operating system, we tend to get used to certain features and menu placements. When a new avatar of Windows appears with a significant change in the GUI and change in placement of some default applications or buttons, then we feel alienated and we try to tweak this new interface and get back to our good old Windows look as far as possible.

Unlike the earlier versions of Windows, Microsoft has intentionally removed the Run command from the Start Menu in Windows 7 and Windows Vista. Well, they do have a good reason for doing this. After all, the Windows 7/Vista Start Search bar is a good replacement of Run with all the extra features and functions that it provides.

If you are like me, use the Run command and want it back in the Start Menu, there is a simple way to restore this traditional familiar functionality to the Start Menu. Just follow the few simple steps below to restore the Run command back in the Start Menu.

First, right-click on the Start button, and, select Properties.

Now, click on the Start Menu tab, and, press the Customize… button.

Scroll to the bottom of the screen and at the top you should see Run Command.

Click on the check box next to Run Command to enable it.

Press OK twice.

The Run… is now visible on the right side of the Start Menu.

If you are running a multi-boot configuration setup with more than one Windows operating systems and want to change the default OS to boot to? Well, it’s pretty easy to configure the default boot operating system from within the current default OS.

That is, if Windows 7 or Vista is currently your default operating system, then you will need to make this change from within Windows 7 or Vista, and not from Windows XP.

Follow the simple steps below to easily change the default OS for startup in Windows multi-boot (or dual-boot) configuration:

First open System (in Windows 7/Vista) or System Properties (in Windows XP) by clicking on Start button > Control Panel > System and Maintenance (Performance Maintenance in Windows XP) > System.

You can also use the keyboard shortcut key, [Windows Key] + [Pause/Break], to open System (System Properties in Windows XP) directly.

Click on the Advanced System Settings (Advanced tab in Windows XP). If you are prompted for an administrator password or UAC confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Windows 7 and Vista users should now click on the Advanced tab, Windows XP users don’t need to as they have already selected the Advanced tab in the previous step.

Under, Startup and Recovery, click on Settings.

Now, under System startup, in the Default operating system list, select the operating system that you want to set as your default operating system. Click on Apply and then OK for saving the settings.

Note:

If you want to be able to choose which operating system to use when you turn on your computer systems, make sure that the Time to display list of operating systems check box is selected. Also, set the number of seconds that you want the list of available operating systems to be displayed before the default operating system starts automatically.

One thing I don’t like about Windows 7 or Vista is their habit of changing the Shutdown or Sleep button into an “Install Updates and then Shut Down computer” button when any pending Windows Updates to be installed. I wanted to put an end to this and tried to find out a better permanent solution then my previous solution. I found a small registry hack that can put an end to this problem permanently and reducing our headaches.

Follow the steps below carefully:

Open the Registry Editor by typing regedit in the Run dialog box. (Goto Start Menu > Run, or, press [Windows Key ] + [ R ] to access the Run dialog box.)

Now, browse down to the following Registry key or create the key if it doesn’t exist.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
to apply the hack for all users OR
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
to apply the hack to your user account only.

Create a new entry by right-clicking on the right pane and choosing “New DWORD“ and name it
NoAUAsDefaultShutdownOption
, set its value of
1
.

Now our normal Shutdown or Sleep button should be back while also providing the Install Updates and Shut Down option, should you want to install the pending Windows Updates at shut down.

If you want the default option back, just set the value of
NoAUAsDefaultShutdownOption
to
0
.

Do you have any other solutions to this problem? Well, comment about it, discuss or share the solution with us.

File associations in Windows can get jeopardized either due to a corrupted registry or a malicious virus attack. The latter can also cause further problems like disabled system tools and file associations so that it becomes harder to spot and remove the virus or malicious software from the PC. File Association Fixer is a free portable software for the Windows operating system that can easily fix the broken file associations. File association basically links a file type, like .jpg or .txt, to a program so that when a file with the particular file type is executed, it is opened in the default program set.

File Association Fixer detects whether you have Windows 7 or Windows Vista installed and accordingly offers you the relevant fixes only. File Associations Fixer displays a list of file types sorted alphabetically on launch.

A click on any of the offered file types will reset the file association to the default program. This has to be done for every file type that is to be fixed.

A restart is required for the new file associations to be loaded by the Windows operating system.

File Association Fixer can be a helpful program after a virus attack. The computer program is compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7 and can be downloaded from The Windows Club website.

It is always recommended to periodically use the Check Disk tool to check the integrity of disks. Check Disk is a very powerful tool, it examines disks and can even correct many types of common errors on FAT, FAT32, and NTFS drives. Check Disk can’t repair corrupted data within files that seem to be structurally intact. You can run Check Disk from the command line or through a graphical interface. This article will show you how to use Check Disk using the later.

How to Run Check Disk Interactively using Windows Explorer?

To use Windows Explorer to check disk drives on the local computer, follow these simple steps:

1. Click on Start, and then click Computer. Under Hard Disk Drives, right-click a drive that you want to check, and then click Properties.
2. Switch to the Tools tab, click Check Now. This will display the Check Disk dialog box.
3. If you want to check for errors without repairing them, click Start without selecting either of the check boxes in the Check Disk dialog box.
4. If you want to check for errors and attempt to resolve them, select either or both of the following options, and then click Start.

Automatically Fix File System Errors specifies whether Windows repairs file system errors it finds.

Scan For And Attempt Recovery Of Bad Sectors specifies whether Windows checks for bad sectors and attempts to recover readable information from them.

5. If the disk is in use, Check Disk displays a prompt asking whether you want to schedule the disk to be checked the next time you restart the system. Click Yes to schedule this check.
6. When Check Disk finishes analyzing and repairing the disk, click OK.

There have been a lot of buzz about Windows 7 GodMode in the “webosphere” in the last few days. Be it popular news sites or tech websites, everyone was having something or the other to say about the “GodMode“. If you missed the news, FYI, the so-called GodMode trick of Windows 7 is an old trick present from the Windows Vista time. Basically, Windows 7′s so-called GodMode is actually a shortcut to accessing the operating system’s various control settings, originally meant for the use of the developers.

By simply creating a new folder in Windows 7 and renaming it with a certain text string (GUID string) at the end, you will be able to access all the settings and features in a single place. Now, you can do everything from changing the look of the mouse pointer to making a new hard-drive partition from this single place.GodMode is not magical as MSDN (Microsoft Software Developer Network) has clarified here.

TheWindowsClub has released a simple, freeware utility known as “GodMode Creator” which lets you create 38 “GodMode’s” in Windows 7 / Vista with a single click.

[ Download GodMode Creator ]

Note: GodMode is known to be incompatible with 64-bit versions and could crash explorer.exe. If you find that this makes your explorer.exe unstable or makes it crash, please delete this folder using the command prompt, as mentioned at the end of this page.

As the name suggests the main function of this utility is to create a system restore point by just clicking a button in Windows Vista and Windows 7.

System Restore helps you restore your computer’s system files to an earlier time. This features can sometime successfully rescues your system from a worst condition like Windows cannot boot due to an error or BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). So, it’s a good idea to have healthy system restore points. If you want to create a system restore point manually, you have to follow the following way:

Open Control Panel > Open the System Protection box > Open the System Restore utility to create a restore point. You can also do the same by first pressing [ Windows Key ] + [ R ] to open Run dialog. Type in
rstrui.exe
to open System Restore Utility.

Quick Restore Maker does the same job in just a single click. Simply download the .zip file and extract it to the Program Files folder. Place a shortcut on your Desktop. Now run the utility to create System Restore points manually. The restore points generated by the utility is named as ‘QuickRestoreMaker Generated‘ point.
