This free utility takes parental controls on your Windows operating system to the next level. Romaco Timeout also controls how much time a user can spend online before the application locks down the browser, and also gives the option of turning everything back on again after a certain amount of time has elapsed. If you want to set the application to start-up automatically every time a certain user logs on, you can do that, too.

When the maximum allotted time of computer usage reaches then the user is either logged off his account or the computer shuts down completely. After the user is logged off he/she will only be able to log back in if the administration password is typed, otherwise the user will have to wait until the next day when his usage quota will be reset. Romaco Timeout is designed to be automatic so it will require no administration after the first setup. But if you want to change its settings read below for a small how to.

How to use Romaco Timeout?

• After the installation of Romaco Timeout, launch it with Administrator privileges. Upon first launch it will prompt you to set the administrator password.
• Now to configure Romaco Timeout, first click on the Enable Timeout check box.
• Timeout is user account specific, so if you want to restrict more than one user account, simply log into that account and configure the settings individually for each account.
• Now select which mode to use between Daily Quota and Pre-session Time Limit. If Romaco Timeout is to work without user intervention for every session, then the Startup Automatically For This User check box must be checked.
  • The Daily Quota mode lets you set a time limit in hours and minutes for each day.
  • The Per-Session mode lets you set a time limit in hours and minutes for the session.
• The Warn box lets you set the time at which the user will receive a warning about his/her session time out, so that they can save their work. Select the action when the time limit ends for the user from the Action Option.
• The buttons on the right side give you more control over the software, you can reset  quotas, reset the administrative password, get help on Romaco Timeout, etc. from those buttons.

The second Platform Preview of Internet Explorer 9 shows a noticeable JavaScript speed improvements, thereby closing the gap between IE9 and Safari, Chrome, Opera, while surpassing Mozilla Firefox web browser.

The Acid3 score of Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview 2 also improved and went up to 68 out of 100. Not a perfect score but the IE9 developers have promised a better compatibility in the later releases.

A new user string is also introduced, with the feature to change the user agent string in the preview version of IE9.

IE9’s default UA string

There are four changes to IE8’s UA string that site developers need to be aware of:
1. Application version is incremented from ‘Mozilla/4.0′ to ‘Mozilla/5.0′ to match other browsers (explained well in the great History of the user-agent string post). This change signals that IE9 is an interoperable browser.
2. Version token is incremented from ‘MSIE 8.0′ to ‘MSIE 9.0′.
3. Trident token is incremented from ‘Trident/4.0′ to ‘Trident/5.0′.
4. IE9 will send the following short UA string without additions made by other software installed on the machine:

Similar to IE8, IE9′s Compatibility View will map to IE7 Standards Mode, and IE9′s UA string when in Compatibility View will be:

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0; Trident/5.0)

In Compatibility View, IE9 reports itself as IE7 through the application version number (Mozilla/4.0) and version token (MSIE 7.0). This is done for compatibility. An incremented Trident token, from ‘Trident/4.0′ to ‘Trident/5.0′, allows websites to distinguish between IE9 running in Compat View and IE8 running in Compat View.

System Requirements

• Internet Explorer Platform Preview requires Windows 7 (x86 or x64) or Windows Vista SP2 (x86 or x64).
• For Vista users, Windows Internet Explorer 8 and DirectX 2D (D2D) must be installed on your system. If you’re not already running Internet Explorer 8, download and install it first. Then install DirectX 2D by installing the Platform Update for Windows Vista, available on Windows Update. Platform Preview is only available in a 32-bit x86 version but it will install and run on 64-bit Windows 7 and Vista.

Whatever be the reason for uninstalling AVG, below you will find both the normal procedure as well as the manual procedure for doing this:

Normal Uninstall

The first thing you should try, and, recommended, is uninstall AVG using the Add/Remove Programs (for Windows XP) or using Programs and Features (for Windows 7 and Vista) under Control Panel. Follow these instructions to carry out the task:

1. Click on the Start Button, select Control Panel.
2. Open Add/Remove Programs (for Windows XP users) or Open Programs and Features (for Windows 7 and Vista users).
3. Find AVG in the Programs list and highlight it.
4. Click on Remove or right-click and select Uninstall and follow the wizard to uninstall AVG.

Manual Uninstall (Complete Removal of AVG)

Grisoft, the maker of AVG, provides an uninstall utility specially made to remove AVG completely from the computer system. Follow the steps below:

Click on the following link and download AVG Remover to your desktop. Select the 32-bit if you are using the 32-bit version or download the 64-bit if you are using the 64-bit version.

Double-click on the downloaded file to run it. Windows 7 or Vista users should run it in elevated command prompt. Click on Yes to continue removing AVG from your computer. It may need one or more restarts during the cleaning process.

Once the uninstall has completed, restart your computer. You can then go ahead and install another antivirus or install AVG again.

Unlike the earlier versions of Windows, Microsoft has intentionally removed the Run command from the Start Menu in Windows 7 and Windows Vista. Well, they do have a good reason for doing this. After all, the Windows 7/Vista Start Search bar is a good replacement of Run with all the extra features and functions that it provides.

If you are like me, use the Run command and want it back in the Start Menu, there is a simple way to restore this traditional familiar functionality to the Start Menu. Just follow the few simple steps below to restore the Run command back in the Start Menu.

• First, right-click on the Start button, and, select Properties.
• Now, click on the Start Menu tab, and, press the Customize… button.
• Scroll to the bottom of the screen and at the top you should see Run Command.
• Click on the check box next to Run Command to enable it.
• Press OK twice.

The Run… is now visible on the right side of the Start Menu.

That is, if Windows 7 or Vista is currently your default operating system, then you will need to make this change from within Windows 7 or Vista, and not from Windows XP.

Follow the simple steps below to easily change the default OS for startup in Windows multi-boot (or dual-boot) configuration:

1. First open System (in Windows 7/Vista) or System Properties (in Windows XP) by clicking on Start button > Control Panel > System and Maintenance (Performance Maintenance in Windows XP) > System.

   You can also use the keyboard shortcut key, [Windows Key] + [Pause/Break], to open System (System Properties in Windows XP) directly.

2. Click on the Advanced System Settings (Advanced tab in Windows XP). If you are prompted for an administrator password or UAC confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

3. Windows 7 and Vista users should now click on the Advanced tab, Windows XP users don’t need to as they have already selected the Advanced tab in the previous step.

   

4. Under, Startup and Recovery, click on Settings.

   

5. Now, under System startup, in the Default operating system list, select the operating system that you want to set as your default operating system. Click on Apply and then OK for saving the settings.

   

Note:

If you want to be able to choose which operating system to use when you turn on your computer systems, make sure that the Time to display list of operating systems check box is selected. Also, set the number of seconds that you want the list of available operating systems to be displayed before the default operating system starts automatically.

Follow the steps below carefully:

• Open the Registry Editor by typing regedit in the Run dialog box. (Goto Start Menu > Run, or, press [Windows Key ] + [ R ] to access the Run dialog box.)
• Now, browse down to the following Registry key or create the key if it doesn’t exist.
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU to apply the hack for all users OR HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU to apply the hack to your user account only.
• Create a new entry by right-clicking on the right pane and choosing “New DWORD“ and name it NoAUAsDefaultShutdownOption, set its value of 1.
• Now our normal Shutdown or Sleep button should be back while also providing the Install Updates and Shut Down option, should you want to install the pending Windows Updates at shut down.

How to Run Check Disk Interactively using Windows Explorer?

To use Windows Explorer to check disk drives on the local computer, follow these simple steps:

1. Click on Start, and then click Computer. Under Hard Disk Drives, right-click a drive that you want to check, and then click Properties. 
2. Switch to the Tools tab, click Check Now. This will display the Check Disk dialog box. 
3. If you want to check for errors without repairing them, click Start without selecting either of the check boxes in the Check Disk dialog box. 
4. If you want to check for errors and attempt to resolve them, select either or both of the following options, and then click Start.

• Automatically Fix File System Errors specifies whether Windows repairs file system errors it finds.
• Scan For And Attempt Recovery Of Bad Sectors specifies whether Windows checks for bad sectors and attempts to recover readable information from them.

5. If the disk is in use, Check Disk displays a prompt asking whether you want to schedule the disk to be checked the next time you restart the system. Click Yes to schedule this check. 
6. When Check Disk finishes analyzing and repairing the disk, click OK.

System Restore helps you restore your computer’s system files to an earlier time. This features can sometime successfully rescues your system from a worst condition like Windows cannot boot due to an error or BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). Open Control Panel > Open the System Protection box > Open the System Restore utility to create a restore point. You can also do the same by first pressing [ Windows Key ] + [ R ] to open Run dialog. Type in rstrui.exe to open System Restore Utility.

Quick Restore Maker does the same job in just a single click. Simply download the .zip file and extract it to the Program Files folder. Place a shortcut on your Desktop. Now run the utility to create System Restore points manually. The restore points generated by the utility is named as ‘QuickRestoreMaker Generated‘ point.
