Microsoft is issuing 4 bulletins for Patch Tuesday this month which will fix 22 vulnerabilities.

Compared to June’s Patch Tuesday 16 security bulletins, this month Microsoft has issued almost one-fourth of the numbers. But this four bulletins will patch a huge number of vulnerabilities, 22 to be exact. Out of the four updates, one is rated “critical,” while the other three is marked “important.”

Three bulletins will update and fix Windows, while the fourth one will fix a number of vulnerabilities in Visio 2003. The critical Windows bulletin and the important Office update both fix remote code execution issues; the other two important Windows fixes resolve elevation of privilege flaws. All the three Windows updates needs a reboot to apply, though the Office update may need a reboot.

The following table summarizes the security bulletins for this month in order of severity.

Bulletin ID

Maximum Severity Rating and Vulnerability Impact

Restart Requirement

Affected Software

Microsoft Windows

Bulletin 4

Microsoft will host a webcast to address customer questions on the security bulletins on July 13, 2011, at 11:00 AM Pacific Time (US & Canada).

Microsoft’s Severity Rating System Explained

The severity rating system provides a single rating for each vulnerability. The definitions of the ratings are:

Critical: A vulnerability whose exploitation could allow the propagation of an Internet worm without user action.

Important: A vulnerability whose exploitation could result in compromise of the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of users data, or of the integrity or availability of processing resources.

Moderate: Exploitability is mitigated to a significant degree by factors such as default configuration, auditing, or difficulty of exploitation.

Low: A vulnerability whose exploitation is extremely difficult, or whose impact is minimal.

Microsoft has issued an advanced security bulletin notification for June 2011 Patch Tuesday.

Unlike last month’s only two bulletins, this month Microsoft has issued 16 bulletins, covering a range of security holes in the Windows operating system, .NET Framework, Silverlight, Forefront Threat Management Gateway, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office, SQL Server and <a title="Download Free Visual Studio 2010 Keyboard Shortcut "Cheat Sheet" Posters" href="http://www.mytechguide.org/8252/download-free-visual-studio-2010-keyboard-shortcut-cheat-sheet-posters/">Visual Studio.

Nine of the 16 security bulletins are rated “critical” by Microsoft and almost all of them requires a system restart. The rest seven bulletins are rated ”Important.” The 9 critical bulletins are for a remote code execution vulnerability. And out of the 9, two of the critical bulletins will address severe vulnerabilities in the Internet Explorer web browser. This month will include a critical security patch for the latest Internet Explorer 9 web browser.

Mozilla has released the Release Candidate 2 (RC2) of Firefox 4 web browser. Mozilla has a release date listed for Firefox 4 as March 22nd. The RC 2 build is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Mozilla Firefox 4 is almost here! We updated the Firefox 4 release candidate with some minor security fixes and updates to several localizations, including the addition of a Vietnamese localized version. Firefox will now ship in 80 languages. We’re excited to deliver the new features, look and speed of Firefox 4 to our more than 400 million users worldwide.

Unlike Internet Explorer 9, FF 4 will support Windows XP, which is a great news for its users. However, FF 4 will not work on Windows editions prior to XP or on Apple Mac OS not running OSX 10.5 or 10.6.

According to an article posted at the Technology section of MSNBC aptly titled “Why Firefox 4 isn’t abandoning Windows XP,”

Clearly, it’s in the interests of Microsoft’s business to get Windows XP users to upgrade to new Windows versions. Leaving them in the cold on the new Internet Explorer is one way to prod them in that direction. But it’s also not an unreasonable suggestion. A decade is more like a century on the web.

Here’s the main problem: A bunch of us haven’t gotten the message. More than 40 percent of web users are still on Windows XP. And that’s the first thing Firefox engineering director Johnathan Nightingale brought up when I asked him about the issue. In an ironic twist, Mozilla’s upcoming Firefox 4 is supporting not only Microsoft’s Windows XP but also Windows 2000, even though Microsoft’s new browser doesn’t.

“That’s a decision that they get to make, but it sure did surprise us, because the best metrics that we’ve got say 40 to 50 percent of the web is still on XP. That’s too big for us to just leave them behind,” Nightingale said via phone. “Yeah, it’s harder work, because XP has a totally different hardware-acceleration story. You need to be using Direct3D there, instead of Direct2D on Vista and 7. It meant we had to do a lot more work architecturally to make sure we could offer a high-quality experience across both of them. But you know what? That’s the job.”

Apple has released an update to its desktop operating system, Mac OS X 10.6.5. This update is the fifth update to its Snow Leopard operating system. The update brings a number of fixes for a lot of issues. The fixes released includes fixes for printing problems, Exchange compatibility, and improved graphics drivers. The update also includes many security fixes.

The maintenance release update for Mac OS X addresses printing issues like delays between print jobs, connecting some HP printers to Airport base stations, VoiceOver bug in Safari, and spacing of OpenType fonts. It addresses networking and syncing features such as improved Microsoft Exchange server reliability and compatibility, improved syncing between Address Book and Google Contacts, better performance with Active Directory, and reliability of Ethernet connections.

Mac OS X 10.6.5 also brings in a slew of graphics improvements to the operating system. The update includes more RAW profiles for newer digital cameras, improved performance for image processing in iPhoto and Aperture, and graphics driver improvements that should improve 3D graphics performance and stability in graphics applications and games.

Even though the update brings many improvements and stability fixes to Mac OS X, but there’s no mention of AirPrint. For a full list of improvements and instructions on how to update your Mac OS to 10.6.5, click here.

The 10.6.5 update is available now via Software Update and is also available via Apple’s Support Downloads page. If you want to download Combo updates, you can get them from here.

My Technology Guide had a rough day today with around 3 hour, 15 min of downtime in total. The main cause of this was the server on which it was hosted. So we took the issue with Dreamhost Support (our host) to see into the matter. They promptly replied with an apology for the situation explaining about why this was happening. In order to save us from further downtime, they moved us to a new server entirely.

The move to the new server was almost transparent and caused little to no trouble at all. I don’t had to do any work on the server or configure anything entirely due to this move. The support staff were very friendly and they kept a close eye to the server move. They configured everything and we regained back stability.

We are very happy with Dreamhost’s prompt solution and their best support which helped us to come back to normal track in no time! Kudos Dreamhost!

The WordPress development team have released WordPress version 2.9 “Carmen”named in honor of magical jazz vocalist Carmen McRae which can be downloaded from the official WordPress website. WordPress users who have configured automatic updates can also upgrade to WordPress 2.9 from within their blogs. As always, it is recommended to backup the files and database before initiating the update.

The new version comes with over 500 bug fixes, changes and enhancements which makes it a recommended download and install.

The feature list from the official blog:

Global undo/”trash” feature, which means that if you accidentally delete a post or comment you can bring it back from the grave (i.e., the Trash). This also eliminates those annoying “are you sure” messages we used to have on every delete.

Built-in image editor allows you to crop, edit, rotate, flip, and scale your images to show them who’s boss. This is the first wave of our many planned media-handling improvements.

Batch plugin update and compatibility checking, which means you can update 10 plugins at once, versus having to do multiple clicks for each one, and we’re using the new compatibility data from the plugins directory to give you a better idea of whether your plugins are compatible with new releases of WordPress. This should take the fear and hassle out of upgrading.

Easier video embeds that allow you to just paste a URL on its own line and have it magically turn it into the proper embed code, with Oembed support for YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Flickr, Hulu, Viddler, Qik, Revision3, Scribd, Google Video, Photobucket, PollDaddy, and WordPress.tv (and more in the next release).

2.9 provides the smoothest ride yet because of a number of improvements under the hood and more subtle improvements you’ll begin to appreciate once you’ve been around the block a few times. Here’s just a sampling:

WordPress now have
rel=canonical
support for better SEO.

There is automatic database optimization support, which you can enable in your
wp-config.php
file by adding
define('WP_ALLOW_REPAIR', true);
.

Themes can register “post thumbnails” which allow them to attach an image to the post, especially useful for magazine-style themes.

A new
commentmeta
table that allows arbitrary key/value pairs to be attached to comments, just like posts, so you can now expand greatly what you can do in the comment framework.

Custom post types have been upgraded with better API support so you can juggle more types than just post, page, and attachment. (More of this planned for 3.0.)

You can set custom theme directories, so a plugin can register a theme to be bundled with it or you can have multiple shared theme directories on your server.

TinyMCE WYSIWYG editing and Simplepie are upgraded.

Sidebars can now have descriptions so it’s more obvious what and where they do what they do.

Specify category templates not just by ID, like before, but by slug, which will make it easier for theme developers to do custom things with categories – like post types!

Registration and profiles are now extensible to allow you to collect things more easily, like a user’s Twitter account or any other fields you can imagine.

The XML-RPC API has been extended to allow changing the user registration option. We fixed some Atom API attachment issues.

Create custom galleries with the new include and exclude attributes that allow you to pull attachments from any post, not just the current one.

When you’re editing files in the theme and plugin editors it remembers your location and takes you back to that line after you save. (Thank goodness!!!)

The Press This bookmarklet has been improved and is faster than ever; give it a try for on-the-fly blogging from wherever you are on the internet.

Custom taxonomies are now included in the WXR export file and imported correctly.

Better hooks and filters for excerpts, smilies, HTTP requests, user profiles, author links, taxonomies, SSL support, tag clouds, query_posts and WP_Query

The complete list of changes can be viewed at WordPress Trac. Happy upgrading!

I am very excited about these new features and will soon upgrade. Did you upgrade your WordPress installation to WordPress 2.9 “Carmen”? Tell us about your experience!

Hi My Technology Guide readers,

My semester exams are starting from 15th December and will end on 26th December. I have a lot of revisions to do too. Due to this, I will not be able to give quality time in writing new articles here for you until 26th December, 2009.

Even though I wrote a few articles in advanced and scheduled them to post, unfortunately in a hurry I accidentally deleted the images folder making a lot of images gone missing in them. So, I had to revert them from publishing. Anyway, I will try to write new posts in between if I get some free time.

During this time do email me with new tips, compliment or even critiques. They definitely lifts my spirit and inspires me to write more good articles. Also you can join and talk with other members in the official Facebook fan page.

Happy Holidays to everyone!!!

À bientôt! See you all on 26th December, stay cool!
