How To Change Windows Product Key After Install

Do you need to change your product key after installing Windows Vista or Windows 7 to activate properly? There is a very simple command line trick to do this task easily.

Just follow the steps below:

  • First, Click on Start Menu. In the Start Menu Search box, type cmd or command prompt.
  • Right click on the Command Prompt shortcut and select Run As Administrator.
  • Now, at the command prompt, type slmgr.vbs -ipk type-your-product-key
    For example, type slmgr.vbs -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
    where xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx is your product key
  • After changing the product key, to activate windows type
    slmgr.vbs -ato

If the product key you used is your own genuine product key, then it should activate automatically.
