Microsoft allows anyone to install and use any version of Windows 7 for 30 days without having to enter an activation key. But there is a small trick to extend this trial for 120 days or 4 months by using a utility that is supplied by Microsoft only. This utility is called the Software License Manager (slmgr) installed with Windows 7 and no other external hacking or piracy tools.
To see how many days are left for your trial version of Windows 7, click Start, right-click Computer, and choose Properties. At the bottom of the screen under Windows Activation, you’ll see the number of days left in your trial period.
When that trial period gets close to zero, you can extend the trial period for another 30 days for free using the following steps:
- Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories.
- Right-Click on Command Prompt and choose Run As Administrator. Enter your administrator password.
- Type slmgr -rearm in the command prompt and press Enter.
[Note: The space between slmgr and the hyphen in front of rearm.]
- Restart Windows 7 for the extend to happen.
Once the Windows 7 restarts, you can check the Properties window to check if the activation grace period has been extended by 30 days or not.
You can run the slmgr -rearm trick a total of two more times. After using slmgr -rearm for three times at the end of each 30-day period, you will end up using Windows 7 for 120 days or 4 months without having to activate using activation key.
